Hey, Four Eyes!

That's what you'll soon hear a lot more around the neighborhood once the hundred's of free eye glasses arrive at World Impact.  For three days at the end of June we held a free eye clinic at our resource center with the help of Christian Layman Church in Oakland, our InterVarsity interns, and students from the Berkeley School of Optometry.

For three days we held an all-out eye clinic complete with eye screening, retina scans, glaucoma testing, and eye glass prescriptions. We had qualified doctors using lens refractors to write out prescriptions for the clients, and volunteers giving eye tests on the eye chart.  We even had a prayer tent that was frequently used when people were waiting in line!  It was an amazing week and a great start to our summer ministry.  

Andrew, the leader of the CLC team, said that the greatest part of the week wasn't just having an eye clinic, but being able to walk around the neighborhood and pray for folks.  "For me," Andrew said, "This is the place where spirituality and discipleship meet." 

It wasn't just the leaders who got into it either.  Matt, a missionary-in-training at the ripe young age of 10, raved about the week.  He asked his mother if they could come again next year because, "it was just so easy to make friends!"  Another student from CLC claimed it was one of the best weeks of his life. 

Gilbert, the lead doctor and member of Christian Layman Church, put in a tremendous amount of time and effort in planning this event and we cannot thank him enough.  Although he was incredibly busy for most of the time directing the clinic, he was able to find time to pray with a few locals.  After one prayer time, both he and the lady he was praying for were caught up in tears.  

We received many heartfelt "thanks" from the community.  There were many people who needed eye glasses more than they even thought.  We are very thankful that we were able to put on such an incredible event.

At the end of the week they put on a 4th of July BBQ that was the best ever!  A throw back R&B band came and played some awesome music.
